memories of the corner store

Yesterday while at the doctors office waiting for one of the grandchildren I picked up a
magazine and seen a picture of a corner store in Saint John, one I had been in a number of times
on the way to high school.

Brought back memories of going to the corner store for milk, bread and eggs and
of course penny candy and a bag of chips and putting your hand into the cooler of cold water for
a glass bottle of pop.

No parking lots, no large windows and the shelves were cramped, usually not more
than a few customers at a time. Always someone you knew standing around the oil stove
in middle of store. Usually the owners of the corner store became part of your life simply
because they sell milk and bread.

I also remember the corner store is where you took your empties and dad would say gather
up those bottles and take some change (get rid of the pennies) and get some milk. Oh I
just prayed the aunt wasn't working at Zed's store, she didn't like those bottles nor the pennies. lol
Clarence Zed would watch out for Malcolm's dog MacTavish, give him a carmel when he
ran in usually to hide from the dog catcher.

Today we still have gathering places to go to for a coffee and a chat.... Tim Hortons has
really opened those doors and many other shops around..but nothing beats the
corner store.
